What is DraftStreet?
PDFS February 2, 2015
Draftstreet.com was a company formed by “Left Tackle LLC” and was launched in the summer of 2010. They were one of the early big players in the daily fantasy sports scene and quickly gained a big following amongst many DFS players. Before Draftkings entered the foray in 2011, Draftstreet would have easily ranked #2 behind Fanduel on most players radar. Located in New York, CEO Brian Schwartz and his team had a cult following with their daily fantasy sports platform and along with Fanduel helped introduce the idea of Daily Fantasy World Championship tournaments which are now the big attraction on all major DFS sites. They were well known for their partnership with Fantasy Sports Guru Matthew Berry who helped promote Draftstreet on their website and at various conferences.
Draftkings Buys Out Draftstreet
In July of 2014, Draftkings.com made a major move in the industry and bought out Draftstreet, thereby eliminating the consensus #3 DFS site in the industry. The financial terms of the merger were not disclosed. At the time, Draftkings was a site on the rise and already considered the 2nd best site behind Fanduel. The buyout was controversial and many loyal Draftstreet players were obviously upset about losing their preferred DFS site. Draftkings offered existing Draftstreet players a 100% balance bonus transfer into a DK account in an effort to retain Draftstreet players. The move was an attempt to bolster Draftkings player base and speculation at the time said it would increase their players by at least 50%. This would dramatically enhance Draftkings efforts in closing the gap on Fanduel.com who themselves looked into a purchase of Draftstreet but opted out feeling it would not be worth it for them in the long run. Draftkings promised to adapt some of the features and sports offerings that made Draftstreet so popular. DraftKings CEO Jason Robbins said at the time:
“Rest assured that the plan is to bring all the great elements of DraftStreet over to Draftkings so we can deliver to you the most amazing experience in daily fantasy sports.”
After it was all said and done the move was a success for Draftkings.com as the acquisition but them in the spotlight and continued their aggressive approach at becoming #1 in Daily Fantasy Sports world. They have since adapted some Draftstreet’s niche sports like Fantasy Golf and turned it into one of the most popular daily fantasy sports contests you can play. While Draftkings and Fanduel continue to battle for the number one position, one thing remains clear, no one has yet to step up and claim the undisputed #3 spot in DFS that was left vacant by the Draftstreet buyout.
We have been around since the very early days of DFS and have seen many sites rise and fall. Our team of Daily Fantasy Sports players and industry insiders look to provide the ultimate online DFS resource.
