What is DraftDay?
DraftDay is one of the original Daily Fantasy Sports website and began offering DFS games in 2011. From the get-go, they set out to make an impact in the business and took on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for insinuating that the NFL was imitating a popular contest of theirs. Draft Day was founded out of Chicago and they offer free or real money daily fantasy sports contests in Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Golf and College Football.
The DraftDay Team
Co-Founders: Taylor Caby, Andrew Wiggins
Taylor and Andrew came from a poker background and were the founders of Cardrunners.com, one of the biggest poker learning and strategy sites out there. Taylor Caby was a successful poker player earning well into the millions. With the fate of poker up in the air they decided to enter the DFS space and launched Draftday back in 2011. With a successful media blitz when they first launched Draftday became one of the early players in DFS and had many players signing up to check them out. They continue to show staying power till today and continue to fight for their spot in the industry behind the much bigger sites like Fanduel.com.
DraftDay Investments
Draftday had one round of investments back in April of 2012 by Lightbank. Lightback is an investment fund backed by the co-founders of Groupon.com.

DraftDay Acquisitions
In April 2014, Draftday.com was acquired by MGT Capital for $600,000 and 100,000 of common share in MGT. It was a continuing push by MGT into the daily fantasy gaming industry having already had a stake in the now defunct FanThrowdown and Dailyjoust. At the time they viewed Draftday as one of their biggest assets in their portfolio and saw big things for the site in the future.
MGT Capital Sells DraftDay
In June of 2015 MGT decided to sell it’s fantasy sports assets and that included Draftday.com. They were sold to Sportech PLC, a leader in pool betting organizations and technology suppliers. In the deal, MGT got $4M cash and $3M equity stake in Draftday.
At the end of the day it was likely a smart move by original founders Taylor Caby and Andrew Wiggins to sell when they did as it has become increasingly obvious that it will be hard for sites like Draftday to ever catch the dominating Draftkings and Fanduel. However, there is still an open spot for the #3 DFS site and Draftday and their owners would love to hold claim to it one day.
