What is Weekly Fantasy Football?

Weekly NFL fantasy football contests are just as they sound, fantasy football leagues played every single week of the season. The contests that run at sites such as Fanduel and Draftkings differ from traditional full season fantasy football leagues because you are not committed to one single group of players drafted at the beginning of the season. They are based on a salary cap format and you get to draft a new group of players every week during the NFL year. The great advantage to DFS football is that injuries can't kill your whole fantasy season and the prize pools are massive compared to full season leagues, we are talking millions of dollars.

Can I Play Weekly Fantasy Football For Free?

Yes, all the daily fantasy sites listed above allow you to play absolutely free of charge. You just have to create a free account at each site and then you will be able to browse the contest lobby for free football contests. We recommend joining Fanduel and Draftkings for the biggest free contest prize pools, but also DraftFury.com, who will have an ongoing weekly free-roll with less competition.

Also, don't forget to join our newsletter where we will alert you to the biggest football freerolls and also host some of our own exclusive free contests for just our members.

Types Of Football Contests

Guaranteed Prize Pools (GPP's) - these contests have the biggest prize pools and by far are the most popular. Fanduel for example, will host weekly GPP's sometimes for as much as $100,000 for 1st place. During week 1 of the NFL season expect to see first place in some GPP's take home an insane $1,000,000. Entries fees will vary and each tournament will have a different breakdown of payouts per winning position.

50/50 Games - these contests are named for the prize distribution where the top 50% of teams will win real money. For example, if there are 100 entries then the top 50 teams will all win the same amount of money. These contests are generally for players looking to make a long-term profit in DFS because they don't carry the same sexiness as larger GPP's.

Qualifiers - a qualifier contest is just that, it gains you entry into something bigger. You enter a smaller qualifier contest to gain a spot or ticket into a larger tournament. So for example,  let's say you play a $10 qualifier contest with 10 tickets up for grabs to a $1000 entry fee contest. If you place in the top ten of that qualifier you will then gain free entry into the larger $1000 tournament.

Head to Head - contests that are mano a mano, you vs one other player. The player with the most points wins all the prizes. If you are a new player be wary of these contests, as the top level players tend to play these exclusively.

Freerolls - the other most popular contest because like the name suggests they are FREE. Draftkings tends to have the biggest prize pools when it comes to freerolls but mostly every site will have a weekly fantasy football freeroll for you to take a shot at cash prizes or tickets.

Can I Draft Players On My Phone?

Yes, our top two sites have mobile apps that make entering a contest and drafting players super fast and easy. Fantasy Aces also has an app available for the iPhone. Most fantasy sites are optimized for mobile use even if they have not made an app yet and we find they all work just fine.

Who Is Allowed To Play?

Currently, weekly fantasy football games are available to players from both the United States (not all 51 states) and Canada. You must be 18 years or older to play. The daily fantasy sports industry is currently in a long battle to get legalized all over North America and have made some significant strides in 2016.

States where DFS is 100% legal:

  • Colorado
  • Kansas
  • Missouri
  • New York
  • Tennesse
  • Mississippi
  • Indiana
  • Virgina

States where DFS is restricted:

  • Arizona
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Louisana
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • Texas
  • Washington

Most other states are working on legislation and fantasy sites are still accepting new players. On an important note, New York recently passed a bill to legalize daily fantasy sports and should be legal for all residents by the start of the 2016 football season.
